Moving is one of the most stressful activities that you can undertake. If you approach moving from a calm, prepared place, you can get through the adventure without driving yourself crazy. Your mom may not have told you a few things about moving that can really help, though.
The More Prepared You Are, The Better
Packing and moving always takes longer than you think, and the more you can prepare, the easier the move will be. This means getting everything into boxes as soon as possible, or hiring someone who can pack for you if you don't have time to do it yourself. Try to work out in advance where everything is going to go, also, so that you can direct the movers when the time comes. Take the time to use packing lists, too, because they can help you make sure you didn't forget anything.
Label Everything You Can Label
You may think you'll remember what's in each box, but you absolutely will not. And it isn't enough to just put the name of the room on the box. The next thing you know, it's the day after your move and you've just torn through 43 boxes labelled "Kitchen" but you still haven't found your coffee maker. The more time is on your side, the more time you have to forget where everything is, too. So mark each box with a detailed list of what is inside. You'll thank yourself when it's time to unpack.
The day of the move, you may feel that the best thing to do is to stay out of the way of the movers. While that's understandable, you need to be as available as possible. If the movers have to hunt you down to ask questions, that means that you're losing time and decisions could be made in the heat of the action that you might not have made. Stay visible, and make sure that you're paying attention to any indications that someone needs your input.
Make an "Essentials" Box or Bag
An essentials bag or box is what it sounds like. Think about anything that you might need the first night or day in your new home, and then make sure it's in that box. You should also make sure that you include travel sizes of some big household essentials, like extra toilet paper or dish washing soap. If you have pets, include some pet food and favorite toys so you can keep your pets entertained. Kids may each need their own bag for essentials, and you can even have them pack their own. Think about including snacks as well, just in case.
